Battle of the Bulge II
Our 10 th Scenario Game
At Outdoor Adventures Sunday, December 11, 2005
One of the most famous battles of history will be refought again at OA. This year we have tanks! Plus more missions, more players, and some surprises.
The German attack was code named “Wacht am Rhein” (Watch at the Rhine), but the Americans called it the Battle of the Bulge based on the shape of the German penetration into the Allied front. The German offensive ran out of gas (literally) and their attacks sputtered to a halt by the end of December. Allied counterattacks then gradually pushed the Germans back.
A German surprise attack. On December 16, 1944, more than a half million German soldiers launched a major offensive in the Ardennes Forest area of Belgium. Their goal was to cut through this thinly-held American sector and capture the vital supply port of Antwerp, isolating several Allied armies in the process.
The siege and relief of Bastogne. As one of the few reserves available, the American 101st Airborne Division was rushed to the area shortly after the German attack. It became surrounded and stubbornly held out until relieved by units of General George S. Patton’s 3rd Army. One of the most famous incidents of the battle was when General Anthony Clement McAuliffe, commander of the 101st, was called upon by the Germans to surrender. “Nuts!” was his reply. (Recommended: the book and television series “Band of Brothers.”)
