I've been trying to tweak my WAS equipped A5 to get to 18 bps but have had no luck at all. Now, do I really know if this thing is hitting 18 bps.... no. But I do know that it's chopping paint after it ramps.
I've backed the WAS down to 15 bps and have changed the setting from "3 shot ramping" to "Turbo" and that seemed to fix my chopping issue.
Temperature was ~61 degrees, pressure reading was 800, velocity was ~260 - 270. Flat-line was better today than J&J Ceramic.
The question is... how have some of you WAS equipped boys gotten your markers to 18 bps or have you???
Is this a real number for an A5 and Cyclone?

18 is very fesable, all you need to do is the QEV mod. are you shooting co2 or HPA? also read mr powers RT mod. Most of the things discusses in this will also help the cyclone. i have my cyclone/RT combo at 22bps right now. i have heard that some people have gotten their cyclones up to 26bps. so yea 18 is very easy to get. also slap some 1/8" hose in there. that also will help the cyclone.

I'm shooting CO2 and although I didn't list it, I do have a Palmers QEV on my A5 and it does have the larger hose.
What kind of paint do you shoot? That's the only thing I can think of at this point is that I'm shooting a crappy box of paint. RPS Premium buy the way...

it shouldnt matter what kind of paint you are using, i have shot diablo heat, dbx (really cheap), empire, and marbalizers. they all worked fine at 22bps. i would try cutting your cyclinder spring. just make sure that you dont cut it too much. also check your ratchet and make sure it shows no sign of wearing. and put some lube in the cyclinder

Yes, check the ratchet. Chopping in the cyclone is a sign of ratchet wear. If you don't have a beige ratchet, you'll need to ask Tippmann for one as the previous versions will not stand up to the WAS board's speed.
One thing I have noticed is that it sometimes skips at those speeds. I am thinking the paint is just not settling down into the paddles and I get 'mis-fires'. I can get 20, haven't pushed past that, but I turn it back down to 15 for actual play.

Ratchet is in perfect condition. It's a newer model Cyclone with the "A" stamped on the bottom.
What settings are you guys using? Dwell, De-bounce, Firing Mode, etc.?
As I said in the initial post, when I backed it down to 15 bps and changed it to Turbo mode, I didn't chop anything.

Is there an easy way to check out the QEV to make sure its venting properly?

When troublshooting chops, start with paint. Buy a fresh batch of good paint and see if you chop. If you are chopping with fresh paint that is good quality, then wee need to look elsewhere. I had a big chopping problem last month on cold days with crap paint. However, lately, fresh paint and warm days, no problem. Warm days and crap paint, chop.
Seriously, check the paint. I have found that the A5 likes heavier shelled paint like the Combat 68 from PCS and All Stars.
Just sayin', eliminate the paint factor.

Yeah, I'm thinking that it's the paint. I had no breaks all last season but when the field switched to their "winter paint", I started chopping like mad. The field I play on states "Field Paint Only", RPS Premium.
I'm a patient guy... yeah right! But I can try for a few more weeks until the weather gets warmer, then we'll see if I'm still having issues.
