Battle of Berlin Scenario
Sunday - April 23, 2006
The final chapter in the destruction of Hitler's Third Reich began on April 16, 1945 when Stalin unleashed the brutal power of 20 armies, 6,300 tanks and 8,500 aircraft with the objective of crushing German resistance and capturing Berlin. By prior agreement, the Allied armies (positioned approximately 60 miles to the west) halted their advance on the city in order to give the Soviets a free hand.
The depleted German forces put up a stiff defense, initially repelling the attacking Russians, but ultimately succumbing to overwhelming force. By April 24 the Soviet army surrounded the city slowly tightening its stranglehold on the remaining Nazi defenders. Fighting street-to-street and house-to-house, Russian troops blasted their way towards Hitler's chancellery in the city's center. Inside his underground bunker Hitler lived in a world of fantasy as his "Thousand Year Reich" crumbled above him.
In this scenario, Russians will advance on Berlin from three directions and must capture the following 4 objectives to win. (There will be a German flag marking each)
1. Capture and hold the Seelow Heights that guard the eastern access to the city.
2. Capture and hold the Brandenburg munitions factory and supply depot.
3. Capture and hold the Ludendorf Flak Tower and bunker complex.
4. Capture and hold the dreaded Reichstag and Fuhrer bunker. (If we can find someone to play Hitler, the Russians may have to capture him, too. We are thinking about providing “der Fuhrer” with an elite SS guard, but haven’t figured out the details yet)
The “Stag”, which is always tough to take, will be extremely formidable in this scenario. The flooring in second story will be complete, bringing some of those second floor windows into play, and Germans that are hit while defending the Seelow Heights and Brandenburg factory locations will be allowed to reinforce in the Reichstag and Ludendorf Tower.
Hope you can join us. More details to follow….
