I always find myself interacting with people from different types of nationalities. Living in NYC, it's difficult not to. I thought it might be interesting if the A5OD members posted their ancestral heritage for all to see. ------------------------ To start, both sides of my family come from the small Greek island of Kassos in the Mediterranean Sea. My father was born there but my mother was born here in the States. I guess that makes me 1.5-generation Greek. I've lived in NY all my life but I speak fluent Greek and follow all of the customs and traditions of my relatives overseas.

50% German 25% Slovak 25% Croatian/Slovenian
I have a lot of funny stories about the Croatian side of the family, moonshiners, sheep farmers, etc. The reason I put Croatian/Slovenian is that we really aren't 100% sure were my ancestors came from. It was around that area. But to throw another wrench into it, my great grandfather, who was Croatian, was named Rudolf Zugel. Not very Croatian, more German sounding. So, his ancestors might have moved to Croatia from Germany some time back. Story about him: he came to America wanting to be a cowboy, hitched a ride out west, the driver was pulled over, the car was actually stolen, and he doesn't speak a word of English. Ends up being a cook in prison for a year or two.
A little about what I'm doing to preserve my heritage: I'm in a tamburitzan group (South Hills Junior Tamburitzans). We play, sing, and dance songs and dances from Eastern European countries including Germany, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, Croatia, and Slovenia just off the top of my head. We focus primarily on Croatia I play a traditional Croatian instrument called the Bugaria which is sort of like a guitar in the sense that it plays cords but it is usually just for rythm, mot the melody. Every year there is a festival organized by the Croatian Fraternal Union (CFU) for all the junior tamburitzan groups to get together and perform Croatian songs and dances. I've been to Chicago, Milwakee, downtown Pittsburgh, Toronto, Cincinatti, Kansas City, and a few other cities for this festival.

My grandmother is full blown English. My mom had me when she was 16, let me go for adoption, and my current parents... well, i dunno their heritage.
However, I am American. And proud of it!
